As a woman, shopping and trying on clothes can be daunting. Although there are set sizes like small, medium, and large, it never seems like companies are consistent in their sizing. As a project for my fashion marketing class for Parsons Yellow Brick, I was tasked with examining these differences among seemingly similar tops.
I needed to find similar items for this project, which proved challenging. I went to Macy's and found as many similar tops as possible. One consistent difference that seemed to make the most significant difference in the sizing of the tops was the fabric. Many of Macy's products are made from polyester, yet when the tops were a polyester rayon blend, they tended to fit better in comparison to a polyester-nylon blend. The more flexible the fabric, the smaller the top was. Where other tops had a good fit around the bust and upper arms, fabric with more elastic was tighter on my upper arms and did not fit as comfortably on the bust; of course, style affects the fit of the top, but when looking at similar tops with almost the same style, they all did not fit the same. This is a tale as old as time with women's wear. You may be a small in one size and a medium in another. Shopping can be scary, but it is important to remember this is something that affects everyone, not just you as an individual. Women everywhere all get the same feeling when trying on clothes and do not know if it will really be a medium or not. Doing this is a reminder that clothes are meant to fit our bodies, not the other way around.
Outfits should always have a good fit. Show off your body babe your gorgeous!!
